From November 20 to 29, 2020, the World Press Photo Exhibition: Best of Three 2018 – 2020 will take place on the side of Hoan Kiem lake, bringing award-winning pieces of visual journalism to Hanoi, Vietnam.
With the support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Vietnam, Matca will be hosting a series of educational activities, including workshop, panel discussion, portfolio review, projection night and artist talk, during the two weeks of the exhibition.
World Press Photo Exhibition: Best of Three 2018 – 2020

The prestigious World Press Photo Exhibition returns to Hanoi for the third time this year, with the best winning photos from 2018-2020. The exhibition presents photos of the world’s best photojournalists, together with stories that matter from all over the world. The exhibition is organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with the support of Hanoi People’s Committee.
Exhibition tours
Exhibition tours will take place twice a day during the two weekends of the exhibition. During the tour, the audience will learn about the history of the World Press Photo contest, notable winning photos and stories, and the judging criteria. A group of local guides will be trained online by a World Press Photo representative and receive relevant materials prior to the exhibition opening.

“Storytelling Through Portraits” Workshop

Besides describing a person’s face, portraits have the potential to convey a story and the photographer’s emotion and perspective. In this intensive three-day portrait workshop, participants will engage in in-depth discussions on different aspects of making portraits in the journalistic and documentary context. Two experienced photographers, Linh Pham and Binh Dang, will share revealing insights about the techniques and the ethics of photographing people. The course combines lectures, practice, and editing. Participants will share their work during an open critique session on Sunday, November 22, from 14:00 to 17:00.
The tuition-free workshop is limited to 12 participants chosen based on their portfolio. Participants will make sure to commit fully to the workshop.

About the instructors:
In addition to working as an editorial and commercial photographer, Binh Dang explores social issues and his own private thoughts in his personal experimental projects. His works have been exhibited at Documentary Art Asia, Photo Phnompenh, the Goethe Institute, and Xishuangbanna Photography Festival, among others.
Linh Pham is a photojournalist based in Hanoi, Vietnam. He explores the human condition with a contemporary touch which reflects his study in modern art and design. He is a frequent contributor to Getty Images, The New York Times, National Geographic amongst others and his work has been published across platforms worldwide. In 2016, Linh co-founded Matca, a bilingual online journal and physical space dedicated to photography in Vietnam. In 2019, he was named as one of the talents from Southeast Asia and Oceania by World Press Photo.
Online Panel Discussion: Utilizing Online Platforms for Photojournalism

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted all aspects in our lives, and the photojournalism industry is no exception. Having been effectively employed in the creation and consumption of media, online platforms play an even more crucial role at the present time. Joined by Suzan Van den Berg, Exhibitions Coordinator at World Press Photo and Phuong Hoang, photo editor of the most read online newspaper in Vietnam, VnExpress, the panel discussion will spotlight the challenges and opportunities faced by the industry in a time of booming online activities, partly catalyzed by the pandemic.
From the Netherlands, Suzan will talk about how the World Press Photo Organization has adapted to this year’s travel restrictions. Instead of being canceled or rescheduled, their activities are now taking place online, including masterclasses, educational programs, and the judging process of the international jury for the upcoming contests. From Germany, Phuong Hoang will share her experience working remotely with the local photo team to cover prominent news such as COVID-19 and the widespread floods in Central Vietnam.
The discussion will be live-streamed on Zoom and Facebook Live, accompanied by a live viewing event at Matca Space for Photography.
Portfolio review

This portfolio review is an opportunity for Vietnam-based photographers to present their work to veteran photographers, visual artists and mentors. In an one-on-one session, each participant will have 25 minutes to discuss their work with a reviewer of their choice to receive direct feedback, career advice, or information about publishing opportunities.

New Talent projection night & Artist talk by Mien-Thuy Tran

The 6×6 Global Talent Program and the Joop Swart Masterclass are major initiatives by the World Press Photo to highlight talents around the world. For the past two cycles of the 6×6 Global Talent Program, 12 outstanding photographers from Southeast Asia and Oceania have been represented, among which are Maika Elan and Linh Pham from Vietnam. This year, we have Mien-Thuy Tran, the youngest female participant in the prestigious Joop Swart Masterclass.
The projection night will showcase 12 projects by participants of the above programs curated by Suzan Van den Berg, Exhibitions Coordinator at World Press Photo, followed by an artist talk by Mien-Thuy Tran, who will share her ongoing works and experience attending this year’s online Masterclass. As a self-taught practitioner, Thuy is using photography to articulate her interest in the inner worlds, hidden connections, liberation, life and death. Her works have been featured at the Erratic Dream exhibition curated by PannaFoto Insitute and publications such as C41 Magazine and Discarded Magazine.
