The year 2010 marks the millennium anniversary of Hanoi, the vibrant capital city of Vietnam. To commemorate this momentous occasion, Greg Girard was invited to capture the spirit of daily life and the architectural heritage of this unique and complex city. Hanoi Calling: One Thousand Years Now takes us through the city’s streets and alleys, onto its rooftops and balconies, and into the shops and homes of Hanoi’s residents on the eve of the Millennium. Eschewing the city’s better-known landmarks, Girard instead explores the often overlooked features that define daily life for residents, taking us into a private and intimate version of the everyday.

Greg Girard is a Canadian photographer whose work looks at the social and physical transformations taking place in Asia. As with Hanoi Calling, his two previous books, Phantom Shanghai and City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City, combine an anthropological approach with a lyrical realism. His work is in the permanent collection of the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and other public and private collections worldwide.
