(Vietnam).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Via an open-call, 8 emerging Vietnamese photographers will be selected to participate, responding to the theme of ecological encounters to produce a collective body of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Running from September to November both online and in person, the programme will include workshops, talks, individual tutorials and group feedback sessions. The programme will be delivered firstly online, followed by a 1-week Creative Lab in Hanoi, culminating in a presentation of the work created. Articles and talks will take place alongside the mentorship, further expanding conversations to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through Roots &amp; Worlds, we aim to create an alternative education model where collaboration takes centre stage. With artistic and financial support, Vietnamese image-makers will be supported to develop creative approaches to visual storytelling, focusing on contemporary issues of their own interest. The program also fosters interdisciplinary engagement by inviting contributions from Vietnamese and international researchers, writers and artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns Generations of farmers learnt to live in harmony with forces beyond their control, &#8220;observing the sky, the earth, the clouds&#8221; to survive. As the country undergoes rapid urbanisation, ecological concepts started to be incorporated into city planning to improve sustainability, yet the relationships between humans, plants and other species have come under increasing pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting with a plant or place where multiple species encounter one another, participants will be encouraged to follow unexpected paths, exploring family histories, folk tales, environmental change or global trade routes. We would like to work with people who are passionate about photography, who want to learn more, and whose objectives align with the programme.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should my portfolio look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your portfolio should showcase two to three projects or ideas that you have completed or been working on, each presented in a separate section consisting of 8 to 12 photos. You can also include work in progress or a selection of single images if you haven&#8217;t got a finished project. <\/p>\n<p><strong>How detailed should my idea proposal be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The more information you give us the better, but try to think of ideas that are actually feasible for you within three months. The &#8220;methodolody or how you might work&#8221; section above might offer some inspiration.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Can I propose an ongoing project that aligns to the theme?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, definitely. This program is about your development. If you get selected, use it as an opportunity to develop that project. We want to support you to make your work. <\/p>\n<p><strong>What genre of photography is considered?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are looking for projects that are documentary at their heart, but we would like you to explore different approaches and consider the photographic image in all its possibilities. You might combine your documentary work with staged photographs, archives, family photo albums, and other media like text or sound.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is the mentorship structured?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The online course will be structured in four blocks, each consisting of a group workshop, a guest talk and an article from guest contributors about particular themes or approaches to photography. There will also be individual tutorial sessions to support your project development. We will set regular activities and prompts for participants to produce images around the idea that they want to work on and to try out a range of photographic methods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does &#8220;collective body of work&#8221; mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will combine all of the images &amp; stories that have been created throughout the project to form a shared exhibition and publication. During this process, we might choose to combine the work of different photographers to create new stories. It will highlight the creative process based on collaboration instead of individual projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the time commitment if I join this program?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Online activities take place for about 05 hours \/ week. You can spend time at will to work on your project, keeping in mind that there will be weekly creative prompts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My English is not very good, is there translation assistance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There won&#8217;t be simultaneous translation but we can provide a summary in Vietnamese. As the program is mainly conducted in English, participants should have basic language skills. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Am I required to finish a project within the program period?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No you don&#8217;t. However, participants are required to commit to the full program in order to best benefit from the complete experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there any fees for this program?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No. The programme is free of charge, and chosen participants will receive a production fee of 6,000,000 VND to make new photographic work. Domestic travel and accommodation expenses to Hanoi for the Creative Lab will also be covered for participants based outside of Hanoi. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Do I have to be based in Vietnam the whole time?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No. You can be based anywhere and join online for the first phase of the programme (September to November), but we require all participants to be present in Hanoi for the Creative Lab and open studio from November 20 to 26.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I can&#8217;t be in Hanoi for the entire duration of the Creative Lab in November 2023.
